Stella sat on a barstool at the kitchen counter with her hands wrapped around a piping hot mug of coffee.

I’d removed the shibari ropes from her body.

She wore a sheepish expression, refusing to make eye contact with me. I’d given her one of my shirts to put on and she had a blanket thrown over her shoulders to keep her warm.

It was 2:00 A.M. and we were both tired—but I could use that against her.

“Would you have dropped me in?” She didn’t look like she’d trust the answer either way. Her gaze met mine and I saw confusion and something else there, too. It looked a lot like guilt.

No, obviously I wouldn’t have tossed her in the pool. But I still had it in me—that was for fucking sure. I’d warned her about my dark edge of madness that very few are able to accept.

I stood on the other side of the counter watching her closely, my hands gripping the marble with the tension this moment warranted.

The things I could have done to her, had we become lovers. An interesting concept—me taking on such a pretty newbie.

While she’d waited for me in my office, Greyson had delivered a folder. Within it, I found the devastating confirmation of who Stella worked for.

I’d sensed it—we all had.

But some part of me had remained in denial because I’d wanted more time with the beautiful siren.

But this was over now.

My gaze swept over her stunning features and I wanted to run my fingers through her long black hair, brush my hand over her cheek. I wanted a tender moment to lull her into being seduced.

Instead, I resisted.

Stella sat there looking as vulnerable as a frightened bird.

The solemn news Greyson had shared made me sick to my stomach. Stella was working for Lance Merrill.

It made me wonder how much he was paying her.

“You did great,” I said. “Did you enjoy the rush?”

She glowered. “Scaring someone into thinking they might drown? You think that’s fun?”

I gave a casual shrug.

“You’re messed up,” she said bitterly.

I ignored her gibe.

After all, she was working for the worst human on the planet. It wasn’t enough for Lance to have fucked my ex. He’d planted Stella into my life as a spy. Because everyone knew we took on subs to protect them. Then things often became complicated, like throwing love into the mix. Which, in all honesty, I’d felt the stirrings of with her.

But I had to shut those feelings down, keep my heart safely behind the vault.

“Tell me more about yourself,” I said.

“You go first,” she said, rallying.

“Sure. As I mentioned before, I grew up in an old-fashioned family. Experienced a well-adjusted childhood. Excelled at Harvard.” I raised my index finger to make a point. “Football scholarship. Put myself through college. Was the number ten pick that year. Won a few Super Bowls. I have a taste for the extraordinary.”

She pointed to the pool. “You consider that experience extraordinary?”

“That was me warning you not to fuck with me.” I broke into a devilish smile to break the tension.
